I set up various patterns and could play music in real time by toggling the individual patterns on and off. Once I learned the basics the rest was reasonably intuitive. I clicked the Play MIDI sequence button in the lower left corner of the main window to play the pattern (I could have also pressed the space bar).
I could have also pressed the pattern’s assigned key 1 to toggle its state. From the main screen, I clicked it so that the pattern box turned black with white letters (unmuted) instead of a white box with black letters (muted). The final step was to unmute the pattern. In Seq24 I set the pattern to output to Hexter channel 1. I opened Hexter (which automatically connected the audio output but not MIDI). It can also be done by right-clicking the pattern on the main window and selecting Midi Bus). That can be done in the top right of the pattern editor window (click the Select Output Bus and Select Midi Channel buttons). I found that the MIDI output destination must be set for each pattern.

I had a pattern set up but it wasn’t obvious how to get it to play (it had been a while since I’d watched the tutorial videos). To extend a note’s duration, I middle-clicked on the note (in my case, I clicked the scroll wheel) and extended the note by dragging to the right. To add a note, I pressed and held the right mouse button (which turned the mouse cursor to a pencil) and then left-clicked in the appropriate square. I set the pattern name to Bass in the upper left corner of the pattern editor. I right-clicked in the upper left cell and selected New to open the pattern editor. The initial screen was blank, with 32 empty “cells.” With JACK running (via QjackCtl), I started Seq24 from the menu. In general, I’ve found Seq24 to be intuitive except for a few “quirks” described below. According to its web site, “Seq24 is a minimal loop based midi sequencer.” It appears to be a useful tool for real-time performance.
